Prof. Dr. George A Calin

Prof. Dr. George A. Calin received both his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees at Carol Davila University of Medicine in Bucharest, Romania. After working in cytogenetics as an undergraduate student with Dragos Stefanescu in Bucharest, Calin completed cancer genomics training in Massimo Negrini’s laboratory at the University of Ferrara, Italy, and in 2000, he became a postdoctoral fellow in Carlo Croce’s laboratory at Kimmel Cancer Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In June 2007, Calin joined MD Anderson as an associate professor in the Experimental Therapeutics department and was promoted to Professor with tenure in 2013. He explores new RNA therapeutic options for cancer patients and studies the roles of microRNAs and other non-coding RNAs in cancer initiation and progression, as well as the mechanisms of cancer predisposition.

On Tuesday 12 April 2022, MDPI and the Journal ncRNA organized their 2nd webinar, entitled "RNA: The Epicenter of Genetic Information".

The introduction was held by the Chair of the webinar, Prof. Dr. George A. Calin, Professor at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, United States. He explores new RNA therapeutic options for cancer patients and studies the roles of microRNAs and other non-coding RNAs in cancer initiation and progression, as well as the mechanisms of cancer predisposition.

The guest speaker of this webinar was Prof. Dr. John Mattick. Professor John Mattick, one of the founders of the field of non-coding RNAs, presented in an entertaining way a plethora of fundamentals on the roles of RNAs in biology and diseases. Why and what are (non-coding) RNA genes? What are their biological roles? How are these regulated? What are their functions? Are (non-coding) RNA genes so different from protein coding genes? What is the relationship between long non-coding RNAs, enhancers, chromatin modifications and phase separated domains? What are the best methods to study the “trash” of the genome? The answers to these and many other exciting questions, in well-articulated and experimentally detailed answers in the following registered webinar hosted by the Non-coding RNA Journal series.
