This conference will bring together leading researchers, from both academia and industry, to share their recent findings on a range of topics related to Bio- and Nano-Sensors, Bioelectronics, Chemical Sensors, Physical Sensors, Sensor Applications, and Smart Systems. It will focus on significant advances in the area of sensorics, enabling increased sensitivity, portability, and connectivity. Therefore, the target participants for the proposed conference are experts in the sensors community while, at the same time, the conference is expected to be mutually beneficial for young researchers and students.

Vladimir M. Mirsky is Professor of Nanobiotechnology at the Brandenburg University of Technologies in Cottbus - Senftenberg, Germany. He graduated from Moscow Medical University in biophysics and went on to study physical chemistry and electrochemistry at the Frumkin Institute of Electrochemistry, obtaining there his Ph.D. in 1986. He subsequently held an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship and a research position at CNRS prior to joining the Institute of Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Sensors and Biosensors at Regensburg University in 1995. After habilitation he became Professor of Nanobiotechnology and moved to Brandenburg. He is (co)editor of three books and two special issues. His work has led to about 20 patents and patent applications and over 150 scientific papers. Scientific activity of Prof. Mirsky is focused on the development of new chemical sensors (mainly, based on the surface plasmon resonance) and sensor-related surface technologies and materials.

Wireless capsule endoscopy is a promising and less invasive alternative to conventional endoscopy. A patient swallows a small capsule with an integrated camera to capture a video of the gastrointestinal tract. For accurate diagnosis and therapy, the capsule position in terms of the travelled distance must be known for each video frame. However, up to now, there is no reliable localization method for endoscopy capsules. In this paper, a novel magnetic localization method is proposed. A coil as a magnetic field source is integrated into a capsule and fed with a low-frequency alternating current to prevent static geomagnetic field interference. This alternating magnetic field is measured by twelve magnetic sensors arranged in rings around the abdomen. The coil and the capsule batteries were designed based on the geometry and power supply of a commercially available endoscopy capsule and simulated by COMSOL Multiphysics software. In this way, the coil position and orientation were determined with an accuracy below 1 mm and 1°, respectively. As an analytic model for the magnetic flux density of the coil in that setup, a modified dipole model was derived. It was used to show that the batteries help to increase the amplitude of the magnetic flux density. The model is valid when signals below 100 Hz are applied, and no eddy currents are generated within the batteries. It is concluded that the magnetic flux density generated by the developed coil would be measurable with state-of-the-art magnetic sensors. |

Pyroelectric infrared sensors are often based on lead-containing materials, which are harmful to the environment and subject of governmental restrictions. Ferroelectric Hf1−xZrxO2 thin films offer an environmentally friendly alternative. Additionally, CMOS integration allows for integrated sensor circuits, allowing for scalable and cost-effective applications. In this work, we demonstrate the deposition of pyroelectric thin films on area-enhanced structured substrates via thermal atomic layer deposition. Scanning electron microscopy indicates a conformal deposition of the pyroelectric film in the holes with a diameter of 500 nm and a depth of 8 μm. By using TiN electrodes and photolithography, capacitor structures are formed, which are contacted via the electrically conductive substrate. Ferroelectric hysteresis measurements indicate sizable remanent polarization of up to 331 μC cm−2, which corresponds to an area increase of up to 15 by the nanostructured substrate. For pyroelectric analysis, a sinusoidal temperature oscillation is applied to the sample. Simultaneously, the pyroelectric current is monitored. By assessing the phase of the measured current profile, the pyroelectric origin of the signal is confirmed. The devices show sizable pyroelectric coefficients of −475 μC m−2 K−1, which is larger than that of lead zirconate titanate (PZT). Based on the experimental evidence, we propose Hf1−xZrxO2 as a promising material for future pyroelectric applications. |

Several three-terminal organic bioelectronic structures have been proposed so far to address the needs for a variety of biosensing applications. The most popular ones utlized organic field-effect transistors immobilizing a layer of bio-recognition elements that are operated in an electrolyte that enables one to selectively detect both proteins and genomic analytes. These features along with the foreseen low-cost for their production, make them very appealing for point-of-care biomedical applications. However, organic bioelectronic transistors do not always exhibit a performance level beyond state-of-the-art electrochemical sensors, which have been dominating the field since decades. This review offers a perspective view, based on a systematic comparison between the potentiometric and amperometric electrochemical sensors and their organic bioelectronic transistors counterparts. The key-relevant aspects of the sensing mechanisms are reviewed for both, and when actually in place, the amplification factors are reported as the ratio between the response of a rationally designed transistor and that of a homologous electrochemical sensor. The functional dependence of the bioelectronic sensors responses on the concentration of the species to be detected enabling their correct analytical quantification, is also addressed. |

A new structure of a micro-ring resonator for label-free biosensing is proposed. The structure includes sidewall-grating Si waveguide and periodical side-blocks that can enhance the light-matter interaction. From the electromagnetic simulations, the proposed structure exhibits a four-fold improvement on the sensitivity compared with the conventional structure. Moreover, the quality factor of the proposed structure is not degraded from that of the conventional structure. The improved sensitivity is promising for the detection of nanoparticles that can be applied to the environmental field and clinical diagnostics. |

Although showing impressive therapeutic potential, treatments of leukemias with T-cells expressing chimeric antigen receptors (CARs) is limited by their risk of several severe side effects [1,2]. To overcome these problem, a switchable CAR platform has been developed termed UniCAR [2-4]. Unlike conventional CAR which directed against tumor-associated antigens, UniCAR treatment involve an intermediate target module (TM) which can cross-link UniCAR T cells with tumor cells and lead to destruction [4]. The development of these novel TMs against different tumor targets require numerous repetitive tests on different synthesizing trials which is usually limited in quantity and time-consuming. Meanwhile, nano-biosensors are lately known as analytical tools which are highly sensitive, label-free, rapid and reagent-saving [5]. Among them, silicon nanowire (SiNW) sensor is extensively investigated by researchers over the past decades thanks to its compability with CMOS technology enabling mass production [6,7]. In this work, we demonstrated the application of previously published SiNW biosensor [8] on detection of the binding of UniCAR and a part of different TMs. The results underline advantage of SiNW sensor over ELISA method in term of ease of preparation, speed and sensitivity. The method is able to evaluate binding affinity of UniCAR to different TMs and open a potential to quantify the number of active UniCAR T-cells in in-vivo-sample in later stage. In the end, the application of nanosensor may speed up the R&D process of UniCAR concept and later play an important role in clinical monitoring of immunotherapy, especially, in the era of precision medicine. |

Participation to the conference is considered final only once the registration fee has been paid. Registration by at least one author per paper, denoted as Covering Author, is required to cover participation and publication of any accepted paper. Covering Author registration deadline is 10 May 2021. Your abstract and paper will be withdrawn if you do not complete the registration by this date.

Instructions for Authors
The 8th International Symposium on Sensor Science will accept:
- A 200-word abstract in English for the booklet (electronic version) and
- A min 2-pages and max 4-pages extended abstract for the proceedings (PDF format), with Title, Affiliations, Abstract, Introduction, Results and Conclusions (with Figures and/or Tables) and References.
- About Poster presentation:
If the abstract is accepted for Poster Presentation, the author will be invited to submit a poster presentation file (PDF). Please send your Poster PDF file to [email protected] before 19 April 2021 and follow the poster instructions: 1)The poster should be in PDF format 2)The minimum size for images is 148 mm × 210 mm (horizontal × vertical) at 300 dpi. 3)The content of the poster should be a comprehensive presentation of your accepted submission. 4) No copyright issues with any elements in the poster. - About Oral presentation
The slot for Oral presentation is 15 mins. We would advise preparing your presentation for a maximum of 10-12 mins to leave at least 3 mins for Q&A. The video of your presentation should be saved in mp4 format – this will be used in case of a bad connection.
- Create an account on Sciforum if you do not have one, then click on New Submission on the upper-right corner of the window OR click on Submit Abstract on the Conference website.
- Indicate which thematic area is best suited for your research.
- Submit a 200-word abstract in English - the word limits are minimum 150 words and maximum 250 words.
- The deadline to submit your abstract is 30 January 2020 26 January 2021. You will be notified by 02 March 2021 regarding the acceptance for poster presentation.
- Upon submission, you can select if you also wish to be considered for oral presentation. Following assessment by the Chairs, you will be notified by 02 March 2021 in a separate email whether your contribution has been accepted for oral online presentation.
- After the short abstract be accepted, you could submit a min 2-pages and max 4-pages extended abstract for the proceedings (download the template here), with Title, Affiliations, Abstract, Introduction, Results and Conclusions (with Figures and/or Tables) and References. This can be submitted in word format at any time prior to the conference. Please carefully read the rules outlined in the 'Instructions for Authors' on the journal website and ensure that your manuscript submission adheres to these guidelines.
- Please note that only the submitting users have rights to upload the extended abstracts in the system (Log in, then click on My Submissions on the upper-right corner of the window, and then upload the extended version on your accepted abstracts).
- Note: in order to finalize the scientific program in due time, at least one registration by any of the authors, denoted as Covering Author, is required to cover the presentation and publication of any accepted abstract. Covering Author registration deadline is 10 April 2021.
- All accepted extended abstracts will be published as one dedicated volume in MDPI Engineering Proceedings (ISSN 2673-4591).
- Participants of this conference are cordially invited to contribute with a full manuscript to our Special Issue "I3S 2021 Selected Papers" in the journal Sensors (submission deadline: 31 August 2021). We strongly advice to prepare and submit the full paper to this Special Issue before the deadline. Papers presented at the conference will be granted a 20% discount in this Special Issue!
- Sensors is indexed by the Science Citation Index Expanded (Web of Science), MEDLINE (PubMed), Compendex (EI) and other databases, and has an Impact Factor of 3.275 (Journal Citations Reports, 2019).
