Abstract: This paper is dealing with the state of the art of antibacterial nanostructured coatings with silsesquioxane content along the last decade. As follows, the requirements for achieving efficient coatings, chemical functionalization methods, working mechanisms and a classification of different silsesquioxane-based materials will be provided in order to have a complete overview of their most recent breakthrough for antibacterial/antifungal applications.

Also, one may try to place the coated parts in contaminated solution and stir it for long time (12 hours to 1 day) at room temperature. If the bacerial count decreased gradually in a reasonable trend, this means that the contact between the coating and the pathogens was effective for inactivation. Although this is NOT exactly what is happenning in dry conditions, but this can memic conditions for applications under immersed conditions such as ships and submarines.

In-vitro antimicrobial susceptibility testing can be performed using a variety of techniques, the most common ones being agar dilution, disk diffusion, broth micro- and macrodilution, and concentration gradient tests. Each of these above-mentioned procedures requires the use of specific testing methods and conditions, and the identification of appropriate quality control organisms along with their specific quality control ranges. In order to increase the accuracy and rapidity of antimicrobial susceptibility testing, the use of genotypic procedures and microarray for the detection of antimicrobial resistance genes have been alos applied during last year's.
