Professor Gaiping Zhang is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a leading expert in animal immunology and rapid immunodiagnostic technologies. He is a professor at the Modern Agriculture College of Peking University and serves as the Chief Scientist of the Longhu Modern Immunology Laboratory.
Professor Zhang has devoted his career to research on the pathogenesis of animal viral diseases, prevention and control of major animal infectious diseases, and rapid detection technologies for food safety. He has made internationally recognized contributions in the fields of veterinary immunology and biotechnology.
He established three major immunochromatographic rapid detection platforms based on antigens, antibodies, and haptens, and developed a series of rapid diagnostic test products that have been widely applied in animal disease surveillance and food safety testing. He has also conducted systematic studies on animal immunoglobulin Fc receptors and viral immune recognition mechanisms, and proposed innovative concepts such as “immune potential” and “super vaccines.”
Professor Zhang has led numerous major national research programs, including projects under the National “863” Program, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the National Key R&D Program. He has received one National Technological Invention Award (Second Class) and one National Science and Technology Progress Award (Second Class), along with more than ten provincial and ministerial science and technology awards. He has published over 500 scientific papers and holds more than 70 authorized patents, making outstanding contributions to animal disease control and immunodiagnostic technologies.

Professor Javier Guitian serves as a consultant epidemiologist to the UK Animal and Plant Health Agency. He acts as the Head of the RVC’s FAO Reference Centre in Veterinary Epidemiology and as the Institute Lead of the WOAH Collaborating Centre in Risk Analysis and Modelling. Since early 2025, he supports the FAO Secretariat for the Global Eradication of Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR), leading its epidemiological work. He is a Graduate Statistician of the Royal Statistical Society and a Fellow of the Institute of Food Science and Technology. He holds an honorary research associate position at the Social Sciences Research Institute (INCISO) of Universidad Mayor de San Simon, Bolivia. Professor Javier Guitian conducts applied research on a range of topics across the animal and human health spectrum, mostly focusing on zoonotic diseases and food safety. His work combines epidemiological studies in livestock and human populations and analysis of animal and public health surveillance data.
