- Antibacterial Biomaterials;
- Biomaterials for Tissue Engineering;
- Biomaterials for Drug Delivery;
- Biomaterials for Diagnostics, Therapy and Healthcare;
- Bio-fabricated and 3D Printed Biomaterials.
With an open forum concept, the conference will be a platform for both technically conventional and unconventional approaches. At the organisational level, its virtual nature will promote interactions free of geographic and travel constraints and so place delegates in the same interactive ‘space’ with the possible creation of new research community linkages and, with this, new scientific directions for the future.
During the conference, there will be two types of live broadcasts: oral presentations and poster presentations. Through the Zoom platform, participants have the opportunity to engage in interactive sessions, freely share comments and engage in discussions with fellow researchers. Arguably, a virtual conference is also less physically demanding, allowing full focus on the material presented throughout the conference period without the risk of low audience engagement, as can happen sometimes at the start and end of in-person conferences when delagates may be constrained by travel arrangements.

B. Bone Biomaterials
Bone biomaterials encompass a diverse range of materials, including metals, ceramics, polymers, and natural compositions. These materials fulfill various roles, providing temporary or permanent mechanical support within the skeleton, filling bone voids, conducting or inducing bone regeneration through grafts, and serving as scaffolds for bone tissue engineering. They find applications in reconstructing and regenerating the skeletal system, offering significant contributions to orthopedic, maxillofacial, dental surgery, and neurosurgery. This session actively encourages the submission of reports detailing the research progress, innovation, and advanced analytical technology in bone biomaterials. Join us to explore the forefront of musculoskeletal system reconstruction and regeneration.

C. Antibacterial Biomaterials
The WHO (World Health Organization) published a list of priority pathogens with an acronym of ESKAPE (Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter species). Currently, 1 M people worldwide die each year due to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and this number could rise to 10 M by 2050. Bacterial resistance to antibiotics is not new as it was reported over 50 years ago, e.g., S. aureus was reported as resistant to penicillin. More powerful drugs were then developed to address this concern, including vancomycin and methicillin. Unfortunately, bacteria developed many diverse mechanisms to neutralize these two drugs, and the issue of antibiotic resistance has continued. Although antibiotic resistance is a natural process due to bacterial genetic adaptation, this accelerated resistance is attributed to the overuse and misuse of antibiotics.

D. Biomaterials for Tissue Engineering
This session covers biomaterial sciences and their applications to tissue engineering and regenerative medicine for treating or repairing damaged tissue and organs. The scope of the session includes biomaterial sciences, methods/technologies to engineer scaffolds/constructs from biomaterial, and biomaterial-based tissue regeneration and visualization. The topics include but are not limited to biomaterial physical, mechanical and biological science, biomaterial synthesis, biomaterial interaction with the host environment, biomaterial printing and bioprinting, biomaterial-based tissue regeneration and cancer therapies in vitro and in vivo, and advanced methods/technologies to track biomaterial or scaffold-treated tissue regeneration in animal models and human patients.

E. Biomaterials for Drug Delivery
The therapeutic efficacy of drugs and vaccines is crucially dependent on the way they are formulated and delivered in vivo. Over several decades, natural and synthetic biomaterials have been employed to improve the potency of drugs. They are designed to target specific locations in the body, enable their release over extended periods of time, reduce the dose, and minimize toxicity. The present session will review various types of biomaterials designed for the delivery of drugs and vaccines, their modes of action, targeting capabilities, design features in context of macromolecular or small-molecule drug delivery, and applicability to various administration routes.

G. Bio-fabricated and 3D Printed Biomaterials
From surface physical/chemical patterns to 3D scaffolds, additive manufacturing (AM) represents a powerful technology for developing biomaterials with unprecedented biofunctionalities. These include regenerative biomaterials for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, antibacterial biomaterials for the prevention/treatment of peri-implant infections, and patient-specific implants for reconstruction surgery. The advanced biofunctionalities of AM biomaterials originate partially from the complex structures that can be generated at multiple length scales, with various biomaterial types and combinations. This session will reveal the status, the challenges ahead, and the clinical perspective of AM biomaterials through examples of research results covering various types of tissues and AM processes.
