Welcome from the Chair
Dear Colleagues,
The 1st International Online Conference on Biomimetics, with a focus on “Advances in bioinspired materials, biomimetic design and device, bioinspired surfaces and interfaces, bioinspired robotics and bioinspired sensors”, will be held from 15-17 May 2024. The main purpose of the conference is to promote biomimicry and bionics, and it is dedicated to research that relates to the most basic aspects of living organisms and the transfer of their properties to human applications and man-made devices.
This conference is an excellent opportunity for researchers and scientists in the field of biomimetics and bionics to interact with each other, communicate with colleagues, learn from each other, share ideas and experiences, jointly solve problems, and suggest alternative solutions for a better future in the bionics. A distinct advantage of this virtual international conference is that the participants are not required to travel and can simply attend the conference regardless of their location. Participants do not need to seek financial support for travel, nor do they need to leave the comfort of their home, office, and/or family to book a trip and, consequently, adjust to the corresponding time zone.
In the virtual conference setting, while the presenters can deliver live presentations simultaneously, the participants can contribute to the discussion and provide feedback orally and/or using the “Chat” and “Reaction” functions.

All accepted abstracts will be published on the conference’s website. Participants are expected to submit an abstract of 200 to 300 words and should refer to the abstract preparation guidelines at "Instructions for Authors".
After the conference, the participants may submit a full paper to MDPI’s Biomimetics journal. After the review process, the authors of the accepted papers will receive a 20% discount on the APC before the paper is published in Biomimetics.

Dr. Giuseppe Carbone Giuseppe Carbone received the MSc Mechanical Engineering Degree on February 1998 and in February 2002 the Ph. D. degree in Advanced Production Systems at Politecnico di Bari (Italy). He is currently Full Professor of Applied Mechanics, Head of the Department of Mechanics Mathematics and Management at Politecnico di Bari (IT) and President of the Italian Association of Tribology. In 2010 he founded the Tribology Lab at Politecnico di Bari (IT). He has been Visiting Scientist at the Juelich Research Center (D) and at the Eindhoven University of Technology (NL). He is currently permanent academic visitor at the Imperial College London and visiting scholar at University of North Texas. His scientific interests focus mainly on tribology, biomimetics, viscoelastic materials, contact mechanics, adhesion. Since 2015, he has been working on swarm intelligence and specifically on the mechanisms enabling the emergence of collective Intelligence in complex systems. His research has been funded over the years with more than € 8 million. He serves as Associate Editor of Chaos Solitons and Fractals (Elsevier), and of Frontiers in Mechanical Engineering (Tribology Section). He is member of the Editorial Board of (i) Tribology International, (ii) Biomimetics, (iii) ISRN Tribology. He also served as Guest Editor, of Biomimetics, Coatings, Lubricants, and Applied Science. His H-index is 39 (source: Scopus). He authored about 270 publications, of which more than 150 in archive journals indexed in Scopus and ISI Web of Science. Biomimetics of Materials and Structures
Xu Hou completed his Ph.D. (2011) at National Center for Nanoscience and Technology, China and did postdoctoral research at Harvard University (2012-2015). He joined Xiamen University in 2016 as the Principal Investigator of Bioinspired Smart Multi-Scale Pore/Channel Group at Xiamen University. He became a Chief Scientist of National Key R&D Program (Nanoscience) of China in 2018, and an awardee of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars in 2020. His current research focus on liquid-based materials, liquid gating technology, bioinspired nanofluidic iontronics for energy, environmental, biomedical applications. Until now, Xu has published 2 Books as the editor-in-chief and more than 100 research papers such as Nature, Science, Nat. Rev. Mater., Nat. Comm., Sci. Adv., Chem. Soc. Rev., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., Adv. Mater., etc. as the first or corresponding author. Due to his outstanding academic research achievements, he was awarded the 9th Chinese Chemical Society & UK Royal Society of Chemistry Young Chemist Award (2023), the XPLORER Prize (2022), the Membranes 2021 Young Investigator Award (2021), the National Scientific Innovation and Advancement Award (2020), Young Investigator Award of Colloid and Interface Chemistry (2019), Chinese Chemical Society Award for Outstanding Young Chemist (2018), etc. and selected into the China Top Ten Emerging Technological Figures (2022). In 2020, his leading research field "liquid gating technology" was selected as the 2020 Top Ten Emerging Technologies in Chemistry by International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC).
Prof. Dr. Yongmei Zheng

Biomimetic Surfaces and Interfaces
PhD, is a professor at worked at Key Laboratory of Bio-Inspired Smart Interfacial Science and Technology of Ministry of Education, School of Chemistry, Beihang University. Research interests are focused on bioinspired surfaces with gradient micro- and nanostructures to control dynamic wettability, and develop the surfaces and materials with characteristics of fog-harvesting, tiny droplet transport, water collection, water harvesting, water repellency, anti-icing/ice-phobicity and so on. Her work was highlight on News of Royal Society of Chemistry, ChemistryWorld, NewScientist, etc.. She was invited to be a peer reviewer of top journals, e.g., Nature, Nature Chem., Nature commun., etc.. She is a senior member of Chinese Composite Materials Society (CSCM), senior member of Chinese Chemistry Society (CCS), American Chemistry Society (ACS), International Society of Bionic Engineering (ISBE), International Association of Advanced Materials (IAAM), Editorial board member of Scientific Report in Nature, Biomimetics, etc.. She won an ISBE outstanding contribution award in 2016, due to “Recognition of Distinguished Contributions in the Field of Bionic Engineering”, and also an IAAM award Medal in 2016, in Sweden, due to the notable and outstanding contribution in field of “Advanced Materials Science and Technology". She is selected as a foreign full member of European Academy of Natural Sciences (Europaische Akademie der Natunwissenschaften (EANS) ) in 2022. Her publications are more than 140 SCI papers in Nature, Adv. Mater., ACS Nano, Adv. Funct. Mater., Small, Chem. Eng. J., etc., with 15 Cover stories and above 11214 times cited, H index of 47, by world top journals such as Nature, Nature Materials and Science, etc.. Books are published, e.g., “Bio-inspired wettability surfaces: Development in micro- and nanostructures” by Pan Standard Publishing in 2015, and “Bioinspired Design of Materials Surfaces” by Elsevier in 2019, etc.
Prof. Dr. Marc Weissburg
Brook Byers Professor of Sustainability and Co-Director of the Center of Biologically Inspired Design, School of Biological Sciences, Georgia Institute of Technology, USA
Biomimetic Design, Constructions and Devices
Professor Weissburg is a founding member and co-director of the Center for Biologically Inspired Design at GA Tech (founded 2005), and has been engaged in biologically inspired design pedagogy and research for nearly two decades. He has taught BID for audiences ranging from high school students to industry professionals to career scientists and developed curriculum and best teaching practices at all of those levels. His early research helped understand how animal sensing strategies may be translated into effective methods for chemical plume tracking by autonomous vehicles. His current research examines how the organization of human infrastructure may be informed by ecological systems. Using Ecological Network Analysis, Professor Weissburg and colleagues have examined the organization and performance of human systems at scales ranging from single industries to coupled human natural systems, developed design rules for more resilient and sustainable human systems derived from analysis of ecological systems, and examined how these design rules can improve the efficiency of and fault tolerance of human industrial networks. Professor Weissburg is an executive member of the of the International Society of Bionic Engineering, and an editor for leading journals in the field of biomimicry, including Biomimetics.
Prof. Dr. Joseph Ayers
Marine and Environmental Sciences, Marine Science Center, Northeastern University, USA
S4. Design and Control of Bioinspired Robotics
Joseph Ayers has been Professor of Marine and Environmental Sciences and Biology in the Marine Science Center at Northeastern University from 1978 to the present. His research focuses on the neuroethology of motor systems in invertebrates and lower vertebrates. These studies have led to the biomimetic of ambulatory lobster-based and undulatory lamprey-based underwater robots. The robots are based on myomorphic actuators, neuromorphic sensors, and biomimetic controlles based on established neuronal circuits. His team has developed these electronic nervous systems based on discrete-time map-based instantiations of nonlinear dynamical models of the neurons he studied electrophysiologically . S7. Biomimetic Application of Insect Functional Morphology
Professor Siqin Ge is the Principal Investigator of the Functional Morphology and Evolution group at the Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. She obtained her Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2002. Her primary research areas encompass the analysis of insect structure and function, the development of bio-inspired robots, and the practical applications of insect biomimicry. She has undertaken extensive projects, including the Basic Resources Survey Project of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences Leading A Program, as well as the project of significant international collaboration. Her notable research achievements include the establishment of a multidimensional structure and foundational biomimetic platform for insects, the revelation of mechanisms and neurobiological foundations governing the olfaction and vision of key insects, an analysis of the structure and function of crucial insect organs involved in activities like jumping and flying, and the identification of phenotypic differences and variations across different stages of insect development. These findings not only serve as essential foundations and data support for integrating insect structure and function analysis into biomimetic applications but also provide critical support for original research and the development of bio-inspired robots and biomimetic devices. Professor Siqin Ge has authored six books and published over a hundred papers in SCI journals. She has received several prestigious awards, including the Young Scientist Award from the China Entomological Society, the Second Prize of the Zhou Yao Classification Award Fund, a fellowship at the Smithsonian Institution in the United States, the Third Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress in Gansu Province, and the Second Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress in Chongqing City. Mingxia Sun completed her Ph.D., postdoctoral research and professor assistant at Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences from 2012-2021. She joined Key Laboratory of Conservation and Utilization of Animal Diversity, Tianjin Normal University in 2021. Her research interests are focused on the effects of various micron and nano structures and chemical substances on physiological function and physical properties of insects and their possible bionic applications. She has published more than 20 research papers related with the wettability, adhesion and optical properties of insect cuticle in Acta Mater., J. Exp. Biol., and Bioinspir. Biomim., etc. She visited University of Kiel, Germany as a visiting scholar from 2015-2016. She is a Member of the Chinese Zoological Society, and a Member of the Youth Committee of the International Society of Bionic Engineering (ISBE). Chengquan Cao mainly engaged in the artificial breeding and industrialization of aquatic insects such as fireflies and hellgrammites (the larva of Megaloptera), focusing on the biomimetic value of the special morphological structure and behavior of some insects, particularly the adhesion force and its bionic value of aquatic fireflies and hellgrammites, and the special morphological structure and good jumping behavior of Tridactylidae. Published more than 100 papers and 10 monographs, and obtained more than 50 patents.

S7. Biomimetic Application of Insect Functional Morphology
Chuchu Li is postdoctoral researcher at the Functional Morphology and Biomechanics at the Zoological Institute of the Kiel University, Germany. She received her PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering at Zoological Institute of the Kiel University (Germany). Li’s research focuses on functional morphology, structure, biomechanics, mechanical characterization of biological nanocomposite, insect cuticle, and the development of biologically inspired systems. Li is an accomplished interdisciplinary researcher, trained as both engineer and biologist, as well as have collaborated with many researchers from other fields such as physics, chemical and material science. She has published more than 10 SCI papers in high quality journals including Acta Biomaterialia, Journal of Experimental Biology, Journal of Bionic Engineering. Li has received International Bionic Innovation Competition Award (2022) from International Society of Bionic Engineering, Best Oral Award at The 7th International Conference of Bionic Engineering (2023), and the Acta Student Award (2021, sixteen worldwide). Registration
The registration includes attendance to all conference sessions.
When registering with several people under the same registration, please do not use the same email address for each person, but their individual university email addresses. Thank you for your understanding.
The number of participants is limited: once the number of registrations reaches the maximum number of participants, unfinished registrations will be cancelled.
Please note that the submission and registration are two separate parts. Only scholars who registered can receive a link to access the conference live streaming. The deadline for registration is 10 May 2024.
Instructions for Authors
The 1st International Online Conference on Biomimetics will accept abstracts only. The accepted abstracts will be available online on Sciforum.net during and after the conference.
Important Deadlines
1. Deadline for abstract submission:16 January 2024 29 February 2024.
2. Announcement of oral and poster abstract results: 13 February 2024 20 March 2024. You will be notified of the acceptance of an oral/poster presentation in a separate email.
Abstract Submission
Abstract submissions should be completed online by registering with www.sciforum.net and using the "New Submission" function once logged into the system. No physical template is necessary.
1. The structured abstract should include the introduction, methods, results, and conclusions sections of about 200–300 words in length.
2. All accepted abstracts will be published as one dedicated volume in Proceedings journal (ISSN: 2504-3900). If you wish to publish a full-length proceedings paper, please refer to the “Publication Opportunities” Section.
3. All abstracts should be submitted and presented in clear, publication-ready English with accurate grammar and spelling.
4. You may submit multiple abstracts. However, only one abstract will be selected for oral presentation.
Detailed Requirements:
1. The submitting author must ensure that all co-authors are aware of the contents of the abstract.
2. Please select only one presenter for each submission. If you would like to change the presenter after submission, please email us accordingly.
Note: We only accept live presentations.
Oral Presentation and Slides Submission
The slot for the oral presentation is 15 mins. We advise that your presentation lasts for a maximum of 12 mins, leaving at least 3 mins for the Q&A session.
Authors are encouraged to prepare a presentation in PowerPoint or similar software, to be displayed online along with the abstract. Slides, if available, will be displayed directly on the website using the proprietary slide viewer at Sciforum.net. Slides can be prepared in exactly the same way as for any traditional conference where research results are presented. Slides should be converted to PDF format prior to submission so that they can be converted for online display.
Poster Presentation
If the abstract is accepted for a poster presentation, the author will be invited to submit a poster presentation file (PDF). The submission guidelines are as follows:
a. Your submission should include the title, authors, contact details, and main research findings, as well as tables, figures, and graphs where necessary.
b. File format: PDF (.pdf).
c. Size in cm: 60 width x 80 height–portrait orientation.
d. Font size: ≥20.
e. Maximum size: 250 M

Publication Opportunities
1. Biomimetics Journal Publication
Participants in this conference are cordially invited to contribute a full manuscript to the Special Issue 'The Latest Progress in Bionics Research' published in Biomimetics (ISSN: 2313-7673, IF 4.5), with a 20% discount on the publication fee. Details of the special issue will be announced here later. Please note that no other discounts are applicable. All submitted papers will undergo MDPI’s standard peer-review procedure. The abstracts should be cited and noted on the first page of the paper.
2. Proceeding Paper Publication
You are welcome to submit a proceeding paper (3-6 pages) to Materials Proceedings journal (ISSN: 2673-4605) after the conference. Publication of the proceedings will be free of charge.
Authors are asked to disclose that it is a proceeding paper of the IOCB2024 conference paper in their cover letter. Carefully read the rules outlined in the 'Instructions for Authors' on the journal’s website and ensure that your submission adheres to these guidelines.
Proceedings paper submission deadline: 1 July 2024.
Manuscripts for the proceedings issue must be formatted as follows:
a. Your submission should include the title, authors, contact details and main research findings, as well as tables, figures, and graphs where necessary.
b. File format: PDF (.pdf).
c. Size in pixel: 1,080 width x 1,536 height–portrait orientation.

S2. Biomimetic Design, Constructions and Devices
In this session, we are looking for experimental and theoretical research, reviews, and commentaries and are particularly interested in examples of constructions and devices that emphasize the design principles based biological context and constituent materials, that represent biologically-inspired multifunctional structures, and innovative functions based on smart design and smart construction that incorporate biological mechanisms of self-organization and/or adaptive feedback. Contributions can discuss any level of organization from macro-micro- down to nanoscale.

Nature has evolved numerous surfaces with specific adhesive, frictional, wetting, and photonic properties that, in many instances, far surpass current artificial technology in their range of adaptation and in their multifunctionality. This session calls for contributions from all relevant fields and their interfaces with an understanding of the latest discoveries on surface effects in nature and new developments in surface engineering, mimicking the form and function of biological blueprints.

The design and control of robots based on the biological mechanisms of plants and animals in nature is a key theme in robotics research. This session considers the natural locomotion and motility of organisms and the biomimetics of nature-like machines exemplified by insect-like robots, fish-like underwater robots, humanoids, intelligent vehicles and more. Especially, contributions devoted to new designs of intelligent motion systems at multi-scales are welcomed.

As the largest group in the animal system, the diversity of insect morphology and function plays an extremely important inspiration role in the field of biomimetics, and there are still many aspects related to biomimetics worth exploring. This session aims to highlight the important role of organisms, especially insects, and attract more people to participate in biomimetics by displaying relevant results, some function morphology and related biomimetic application are welcomed.
