Welcome from the Chairs
We are pleased to announce the 5th International Electronic Conference on Applied Sciences. This international conference is sponsored by MDPI OA journal Applied Sciences (ISSN: 2076-3417), will bring together scientists from different areas to discuss important recent developments in a number of fields. It represents an opportunity to gather an interdisciplinary community to discuss applied sciences. More specifically, after the success of the first four editions, this year’s edition will focus on eight thematic areas of applied nature sciences:

We expect that participants of this conference will exchange novel provocative ideas by presenting short oral presentations on research and development discoveries. Posters can be presented without an accompanying proceedings paper and will be available on this website during and after the e-conference.
Specifically, you do not need to seek financial support for travel, purchase air tickets, leave your house, office, and family, make a hotel room reservation, take a trip, or adjust to the time zone where the conference takes place during the entire conference period.

Applied Sciences is an international, peer-reviewed, open access journal on all aspects of applied natural sciences. It is published semimonthly online by MDPI.

Professor of Electronics at University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli, Naples, Italy
Prof. Dr. Nunzio Cennamo was born in Italy in 1975. He received the master's degree in electronic engineering in 2002 and the Ph.D. degree in electronic engineering in 2005, both from the Second University of Naples, Naples, Italy. He is Professor of Electronics at University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli (Naples) Italy. His research interests include the design and fabrication of optical fiber sensors, chemical sensors, biosensors and optoelectronic devices. He is the author of more than 160 international journal and conference papers and 10 patents. He is a co-founder of the Spin-Off "MORESENSE srl" in Milan - Italy. He is an Associate Editor of “Photonics Research” (OPTICA) and of “Applied Sciences“ (MDPI). He is an invited speaker at several international conferences. He is an Organizer and General Chair of the 7th International Symposium on Sensor Science (I3S 2019), 9-11 May 2019, Naples (Italy), and of several editions of the International Electronic Conference on Applied Sciences (ASEC, 2021, 2022, and 2023).

Dr. Toldo, an Italian native, received an MS degree in Molecular Biology from the University of Rome “La Sapienza” in 2006 and a Ph.D. degree in Cellular and Molecular Cardiology from the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Rome, in 2010. After a postdoctoral fellowship at the Virginia Commonwealth University Pauley Heart Center, in 2015 Dr. Toldo became Assistant Professor of Medicine at the same institution. In 2021 he was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor and in 2023 moved to the Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center at the University of Virginia. The research focus of Dr. Toldo is oriented toward understanding the mechanism by which stress signals and myocardial injury lead to activation of the local and systemic inflammatory response that affects the heart function and structure.

Prof. Francesco Dell'Olio is an Associate Professor in Electronics at the Polytechnic University of Bari, Italy. He has attained the National Scientific Qualification for the position of Full Professor in Electronics and Physics of Matter. He was awarded his PhD in Information & Communication Technologies in 2010. Dell'Olio is a regular member of organizing committees and program committees for international conferences, including CLEO, SPIE Photonics West, and the IEEE Photonics Conference. He is co-author of two books, published respectively by Springer and World Scientific, and 50+ papers in international peer-reviewed journals. He has been involved in several research projects funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research, the European Space Agency, the Italian Space Agency, as well as industrial companies, some of which involved taking on roles of scientific responsibility. His research focuses on Silicon Photonics and Nanophotonics, with particular regard for modeling, design, and characterization of devices and integrated circuits for telecommunications and sensing. He has of late branched into electrochemical and colorimetric wearable sensors and miniature sensor-based embedded systems. Dell'Olio recently co-founded a startup company, WEATECHO, which is developing wearable devices for the Healthcare market.

Armando Ricciardi received the Ph.D. in Information Engineering from the University of Naples “Parthenope”, in 2011. He spent a half of his Ph.D as visiting student at the Microphotonics Group of the Department of Physics and Astronomy of St Andrews University, UK. From 2011 he was a Postdoc Research Assistant at the Engineering Department of University of Sannio in Benevento (Italy) where he is now Assistant Professor of Electronics. His research interests encompass light interaction with complex structures and media, photonic crystals, metamaterials and plasmonics. His current research activity mainly focuses on the development of optical fiber devices based on the Lab-on-Fiber technology for biochemical and biomedical applications. He is Co-founder (CEO from 2018 to 2023) of Often Medical, an innovative startup operating in the MedTech sector. He is co-author of 40 papers in peer-reviewed international journals, 3 international patents, and several tens of proceedings of conferences where he has been invited speaker on several occasions. Dual Detection of NO₂ and CO₂ in Combustion Exhaust Using a Photoacoustic Measurement System
Enza Panzardi received her master's degree in electronics and communication engineering and the PhD degree in Information Engineering and Science from the University of Siena, Italy, in 2015 and 2019, respectively. From 2019 to 2022, she worked as a research fellow at the University of Siena where since 2022 she has been associate researcher and lecturer in the field of instrumentation and measurements with the Electronics and Electronic Measurements research group at the Department of Information Engineering and Mathematics. During her research activities, she had the opportunity to visit and work as a post-doctoral researcher at several international research institutions. In 2019, she was visiting researcher at Chemnitz University of Technology in Germany, where she also spent an exchange PhD in 2017. In 2021, she worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the Institute of Sensor and Actuator Technology (ISAT) in Coburg, Germany, and in 2023, she was a visiting lecturer at Halmstad University (School of Information Technology - ITE), Sweden. Her current research interests primarily focus on sensors and sensor-based measurement systems, electronic circuits and systems for industrial and environmental monitoring applications, with a particular emphasis on physical and chemical gas sensors, including novel gas sensing solutions and measurement systems based on photoacoustic technology. Her first paper appeared in 2011 and, up to now, she has been co-authoring 50 scientific publications, which include chapters in books, papers in international journals and international conference proceedings. She is an active participant in all the IEEE and the Instrumentation & Measurement (I&M) Society activities. Her research activity in the I&M field is strongly recognized within the Italian Electrics and Electronics Measurement Group as highlighted by several awards she received.

Lihua Lou is an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Clemson University. She received her Ph.D. from Texas Tech University and completed postdoctoral training at Virginia Commonwealth University and Florida International University. Her research spans multiple disciplines, including Mechanical and Materials Engineering, Pharmaceutics, Biomedical Engineering, Environmental Toxicology, and Textile Engineering, reflecting a multidisciplinary approach. Her lab focuses on advancing nanomanufacturing, 0D/1D/2D materials nanomechanics, the fabrication and application of nanocomposites, and innovations in cardiac bioengineering. She gratefully acknowledges support from NSF I-Corps, the Florida Heart Foundation, and the NSF CELL-MET SEED grant.

Prof. Silvia De la Flor holds a Ph.D. in Structural Engineering and a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering with a focus on Mechanics from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. She is a senior researcher and Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV), where she also serves on the Executive Council as Commissioner for Process Optimization. A member of the Functional and Smart Materials (FUNCMAT) research group, Prof. De la Flor has an extensive background in experimental and computational mechanics, with a research focus on the thermo-mechanical characterization, modelling, and optimization of advanced materials such as shape-memory materials, actively moving polymers, and, more recently, covalent adaptable networks and vitrimers. Her contributions include over 100 publications in ISI-indexed journals, numerous presentations at national and international conferences, and leadership roles as Principal Investigator in multiple R&D projects. She has also supervised seven doctoral theses and over 25 master’s theses, advancing knowledge in the field of smart and functional materials. In addition to her research, Prof. De la Flor has leveraged her expertise in materials testing and characterization to drive successful technology transfer initiatives with industry leaders in plastics, adhesive technologies, polymers, and advanced optical products.

Giuseppe Trusso Sfrazzetto achieved the PhD in Chemical Sciences in 2011, discussing the thesis entitled "Design and synthesis of novel macrocyclic cavitands". During his post doc activity, he developed new fluorescent organic receptors able to detect intracellular metal ions involved in some important neurodegenerative diseases (i.e. Parkinson and Alzheimer). He is Associate Professor of Organic Chemistry in the Department of Chemical Sciences, in the University of Catania. His research interest is focused on supramolecular chemistry applied to sensing, using smart and easy methodologies
Detection, Isolation and Quantification of Myocardial Infarct with Four Different Histological Staining Techniques
Dr. Xiaobo Wu earned his Ph.D. in Cardiac Electrophysiology from Virginia Tech in 2022, where his research focused on the role of the intercalated-disc nanodomain, known as the perinexus, in shaping the phenotype of voltage-gated sodium channel gain-of-function. Following his doctoral studies, Dr. Wu joined Dr. Robert Gourdie's lab as a postdoctoral researcher at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute. His research centers on elucidating the mechanisms underlying arrhythmias, with a particular emphasis on the perinexal nanodomain and its influence on ephaptic coupling and sodium channel dynamics. Dr. Wu has co-authored several peer-reviewed publications and developed a simple and robust algorithm for identifying, isolating, and quantifying myocardial infarction across different histological staining techniques.

Tombelli Sara is research director at the Institute of Applied Physics (IFAC-CNR) in Florence, Italy. Her research activity is focused on analytical chemistry, biosensor development and optical sensing platform design and development for clinical applications. She has also experience in intracellular nanosensors. On the above topics she has contributed more than 140 publications on international refereed journals, books and conference proceedings. She participated in several European Projects and in other national and international projects. She is research unit scientific leader in several national projects. She has been reviewer and monitor for the evaluation of international projects in the frame of the European Community research programs. She received the National Scientific Habilitation (ASN) as full professor in Analytical Chemistry (Italian Ministry for Research).
Natural nanostructures to realize nanoplasmonic biochips for single-molecule detection.
I graduated in Physics at the University of Trento in 2000. I worked for many years as a researcher at the Fondazione Bruno Kessler in Trento and at the University of Trento, mainly on the development of micro- and nanodevices and biosensors for genomics and proteomics. My expertise covers several research fields: development and characterisation of biointerfaces, molecular biology, high-resolution imaging and biosensors. I am the author of more than 70 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals, several presentations in national and international contexts and three patents. Since 2018 I co-founded Indivenire srl, a small enterprise that offers an R&D outsorcing service in many different fields, increasing also my personal knowledge of industrial problems and requirements.

Geopolymers: from sustainable construction materials to environmental remediation
Giuseppina Roviello received her master's (cum laude) degree in Chemistry from the University of Naples Federico II, Naples, Italy, in 2000 and the Ph.D. in Chemical Science from the same University in 2003. She is currently an Associate Professor of Chemical Foundations of Technologies at the Department of Engineering of University of Naples Parthenope, Naples. Her scientific personality presents a wide range of interests, which involve the area of coordination chemistry, and span from investigation of fundamental reaction mechanisms to the development of new strategic synthesis of materials for innovative application fields, e.g. optoelectronics or asymmetric catalysis. Her current research activity concerns the synthesis and study of the structure-property relationship of new inorganic and organic-inorganic hybrid materials obtained from the valorization of secondary raw materials for applications in the sustainable civil engineering and environmental remediation field.

microRNA post-transcriptional modifications: Novel biomarkers and their role in cancer

Title: NIR laser photothermal immunotherapy of melanoma This talk presents a novel melanoma treatment strategy combining near-infrared (NIR) photothermal therapy (PTT), checkpoint inhibitor immunotherapy, and sensory neuron silencing. I will discuss the importance of mathematical modeling in optimizing personalized NIR laser treatment conditions and our findings demonstrating that triple therapy significantly reduces tumor growth, improves survival, and achieves complete tumor ablation in 42% of treated mice, with lasting immune memory.
Christos Boutopoulos is an associate professor in the departments of ophthalmology and biomedical engineering at the Université de Montréal (UdeM). He completed a PhD in Applied Physics at Athens Polytechnic in Greece. As a postdoctoral fellow, he gained expertise in biophotonics and nanotechnology at Polytechnique Montréal and the University of St. Andrews in the UK. In 2016, he established his research laboratory at the Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital Research Center in Montreal. He is pursuing a biophotonics research program that includes both translational and fundamental components, spanning the fields of tissue engineering, drug delivery, photothermal therapy, and nanophotonics.

She graduated in Technical Architecture in 2009 and Materials Engineering in 2011 (University of Seville). She finished her Master’s Degree in Advanced Materials Science and Technology in 2012 (University of Seville) and her PhD in Materials Science and Technology in 2016 (University Rey Juan Carlos). Her research expertise is related to multifunctional polymer and ceramic matrix composites (manufacturing processes, structural and microstructural characterization, and testing and analysis of different properties). She has carried out short research stages at the Queen Mary University of London, Stanford University (José Castillejo and Fulbright Program) and University of Las Palmas de Gran Canarias. Currently, her current work focuses on the development of nanoreinforced multifunctional composite materials (ceramic and polymer matrix) and additive manufacturing.
