Welcome from the Chair
Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to announce the 3rd International Electronic Conference on Processes—Green and Sustainable Process Engineering and Process Systems Engineering (ECP 2024), which will be hosted online from 29 to 31 May 2024.
This conference will present the latest studies in process/system-related research in chemistry, biology, material, energy, environment, food and engineering fields. The goal is to show the current state, challenges, and opportunities and future trends in process systems engineering.
All processes/system-related scientists or researchers are welcome to join this event and share their findings around the following general and related themes, including, but not limited to, the following:
- Green chemistry engineering and environment-relevant processes;
- Experimental, theoretical, and computational research on process development and engineering;
- Process modeling, simulation, optimization, and control;
- Food-relevant processing and improvement of food quality;
- Sustainable and renewable systems engineering;
- Energy system and current demand and electricity market;
- Supply chain management;
- Circular economies;
- Eco-friendly processes and methods.
Submitted abstracts will be reviewed by the conference committee. All accepted abstracts will be available online in Open Access form on Sciforum.net during and after the conference. Following the conference, selected contributions will be invited for submission to the Processes journal (ISSN: 2227-9717, Impact Factor: 2.8), with a 20% discount on the publication fee.

He is currently Full Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Turin and Vice-Director of the Department od Drug Science and Technology. His research activity is documented by about 500 scientific peer-reviewed papers, 21 patents and several books as editor and chapters' author (H. Index 60, 16,100 citations by Scopus; H. Index 70, 20,770 citations by Google Scholar). His main research interests are the development of green and sustainable synthetic and extraction procedures. These studies have paved the road to innovative protocols for chemical process intensification, exploiting non conventional techniques such as high-intensity ultrasound, hydrodynamic cavitation, microwaves, flow chemistry and ball milling. His research group developed a number of hybrid chemical reactors combining different energy sources. He collaborates with several industrial partners in the field of fine chemicals, plant extraction, petrochemicals, pharmaceutics, textiles, food processing and cosmetics. He is the past President of the European Society of Sonochemistry, Editor-in-Chief of Procesess (MDPI), Editor or Editorial Board member of several international journals - Ultrasonics Sonochemistry, Green Processing and Synthesis, Molecules, Magnetochemistry, International Journal of Green Technology, Heliyon etc.. He is member of the Conseil Scientifique de l’UMR ICSM CEA/CNRS/UM/ENSCM (Marcoule, France). He is visiting scientist at the Centre of Bioanalytical Research and Molecular Design (Inst. Translational Medicine and Biotechnology, First Moscow State Medical University - Sechenov) Moscow, Russia. Recent awards: Scientific Research Award 2018 "Organic Chemistry for the Environment, Energy and Nanosciences" by the Italian Chemical Society (SCI – Organic Chemistry). Prof. Dr. Juan Francisco García Martín was born in Linares (Spain) in 1979. He earned a B.Sc. in Chemistry in 2001 and afterwards he obtained a Ph.D. summa cum laude (European Doctorate Mention) in 2007, both from the University of Jaén (Spain). Subsequently, he was a postdoctoral researcher at University of Granada (Spain), University College Dublin (Ireland) and Instituto de la Grasa (Spanish National Research Council), and meanwhile did several research stays at Institute of Catalysis and Petrochemistry (Spanish National Research Council) and the Universities Paul Sabatier Toulouse III (France), Claude Bernard Lyon I (France) and Geisenheim (Germany). He was also lecturer at the Universities of Jaén (Spain), Granada (Spain) and Málaga (Spain), and since 2016 he has been Associate Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering of the University of Seville (Spain).
Prof. Dr. Michail C. Georgiadis

Prof. Michael Georgiadis is the leader of the Process Systems Engineering Laboratory. He holds an M.Sc. (1995) and PhD (1998) on process systems engineering both from Imperial College London. He is also a Distinguished visiting Professor at Tsinghua University, China and Honorary Senior Research Fellow at Imperial College London. His research activities include: • Production Scheduling and planning • Integration of Process Design and Control in energy and production systems • Energy scheduling and energy supply chain optimisation • Biomedical Systems modelling and optimisation • Dynamic process modelling, simulation and optimisation He has successfully supervised and co-supervised 7 PhD students and he is currently supervising 1 Postdoctoral Research Associates and 6 PhDs. His research has been supported by various funding organisations including, EU, and industrial companies. More specifically he has been involved in over 20 EC-funded collaborative research projects as Principal Investigator and project coordinator in 9 of them. He has authored and co-authored over 100 publications in peer-reviewed international journals, 20 chapters in books, participated in over 130 international refereed conferences, and his work has been cited more than 2300 times (according to SCOPUS) and 3800 times (according to Google scholar) from other researchers – September 2018. He is the co-editor of a 7-volume series on Process Systems Engineering published by WILEY-VCH and co-author of a reference book on process and energy integration published by Begel House Inc. He has been in the organizing and chairing a committee of many international conferences including FOCAPO, PRES and ESCAPE. He has organized many workshops for industry and academia.
Prof. Dr. Dariusz Dziki

Since 2013, Prof. Dr. Dariusz Dziki has been a professor at the Head of the Department of Thermal Technology and Food Process Engineering. He is now also part of the Faculty of Production Engineering, at the University of Life Sciences in Lublin and a member of the Polish Society of Agricultural Engineering. Dariusz Dziki received his Master of Science degree in Food and Agriculture Engineering from the University of Life Science in Lublin in 1995. He received his Doctor of Science degree in Food and Agriculture Engineering in 2001; cereal processing from the University of Life Science in Lublin. In 2008, he received his Post-doctoral degree and, he received the title of Professor in 2013 He has been the supervisor of two domestic projects: (1) Influence of natural elicitors on nutraceutical potential of wheat sprouts and evaluation of bioaccessibility in vitro and thermostability of bioactive compounds. (2) Preparation of fiber preparation from the husk and fruit-seed coat of oats using innovative hulling and grinding technologies. And he also acted as the main constructor of one foreign and five domestic projects (Polonium). Moreover, he has been awarded 12 times for scientific activity by the Rector of Agriculture University in Lublin, among other things, receiving the award for the publication with the largest number of citations and the publication with the highest impact factor. His main area of research is Food processing, including drying, milling, grinding, baking, pasta production, food fortification, and food powders production.
Prof. Dr. Blaž Likozar

Prof. Dr. Blaž Likozar has a permanent position as a researcher at the National Institute of Chemistry (head), and is also affiliated with the Pulp and Paper Institute. He graduated in Chemical Engineering, then obtained a PhD in Chemical Engineering as well. He is an expert in chemical reaction, reactor and process engineering, as well as multi-scale modelling simulations. He is experienced in unit operation design, construction and optimization, as well as ab initio modelling. Previously, he worked for one year at the University of Leoben, as well as six months at the University of Delaware (Catalysis Center for Energy Innovation). He is the author of >180 documents (peer-reviewed) (h-index: 25; Scopus). He has been involved in 14 H2020 projects.
Prof. Dr. Wen-Jer Chang

Prof. Dr. Wen-Jer Chang received the B.S. degree from National Taiwan Ocean University, Taiwan, R.O.C., in 1986. The Marine Engineering is his major course and the Electronic Engineering is his minor one. He received the M.S. degree in the Institute of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering from the National Central University in 1990, and the Ph. D. degree from the Institute of Electrical Engineering of the National Central University in 1995. Since 1995, he has been with National Taiwan Ocean University, Keelung, Taiwan, R.O.C. He is currently the Vice Dean of Academic Affairs, Director of Center for eaching and Learning and a full Professor of the Department of Marine Engineering of National Taiwan Ocean University. He is now a life member of the CIEE, CACS, CSFAT and SNAME. , ,Since 2003, Dr. Chang was listed in the Marquis Who's Who in Science and Engineering. In 2003, he also won the outstanding young control engineers award ,granted by the Chinese Automation Control Society (CACS). In 2004, he won the ,universal award of accomplishment granted by ABI of USA. In 2005 and 2013, he was selected as an excellent teacher of the National Taiwan Ocean University. , ,Dr. Chang has over 100 published journal papers. His recent research interests are fuzzy control, robust control, performance constrained control.
Dr. Rafal Gieleciak

Dr. Rafal Gieleciak received his master’s and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Silesia in Poland. Before joining CanmetENERGY, he worked at the University of Silesia as a research associate. In 2007, he joined Natural Resources Canada at the CanmetENERGY-Devon lab as a research scientist. Currently, Dr. Gieleciak leads the Advanced Chemistry and Characterization group at CanmetENERGY in Devon, Canada. With over 15 years of experience, Dr. Gieleciak specializes in determining the detailed molecular composition of petroleum and biomass-derived products and using these data to accurately model and process various feedstocks into transportation fuels. Dr. Gieleciak also has experience in developing both standalone and commercially compatible computational MATLAB software applications that apply mathematical or chemometric models for the molecular simulation of complex hydrocarbon mixtures. Since 2016, Dr. Gieleciak has been an associate editor for the Journal of Sustainable Mining. He is a member of the editorial board and review panel for several international journals and an active member of the US-led Fuels for Advanced Combustion Engines (FACE) group, which recommends sets of test fuels for advanced combustion research. Her research interests lie on the frontier of meat science and food technology and are targeted on the development of food technology to exploit new foodstuffs and improve food quality and rapidly detect food safety. Up to now, she has published 3 book chapters and 46 journal papers, including 42 SCI papers in leading inter- and multi-disciplinary journals (newest total impact factor: 275.711, h index = 21). Dr Enrico Marsili received his doctorate in Chemical Engineering from the University of Rome, Italy. He has been visiting scientist at Center for Biofilm Engineering, Bozeman, USA (2003-2004). After postdoctoral research at University of Minnesota, he took a Lecturer position at Dublin City University. In 2012, he joined the newly formed Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering, Singapore, as Principal Scientist. In 2019, he moved to Nazarbayev University as Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering. Since 2022, he is Associate Professor in Green Chemicals and Energy at University of Nottingham, Ningbo, China. Currently, his research focuses on the characterization of mixed biofilms using electrochemical methods and the development of novel bioprocess for efficient biosynthesis of commodity chemicals in biofilms. His research group comprise mostly PhD students with expertise in Microbiology and Molecular Biology, and he collaborates with several institutions in China, such as South China University of Technology (SCUT), Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology (SIAT) and Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica (SIMM). He has received competitive funding from Collaborative Research Programme and Marine Research Program (National Research Foundation, Singapore), Public Utility Board, Singapore, Integrated Training Network (European Union), Collaborative Research Programme (Ministry of Education, Kazakhstan), STRIVE project (Environmental Protection Agency, Ireland), and municipal level funding (Ningbo, China). Dr Marsili has published key contributions in Biofilm Electrochemistry and weak electricigens on PNAS, Electrochimica Acta, and Bioresource Technology. Dr Marsili is currently Visiting Professor at University of Bari, Italy, and Visiting Scientist at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. To date, he has published 80 papers, which have received over 7600 citations.
I'm an Associate Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering (University of Seville). Here I'm used to applying rheological techniques to the development of different bio-based products. So in this presentation I'm going to talk about the development of emulsions, bioplastics and gels, where rheology can provide useful information.
Dr. George Bollas is the Pratt & Whitney Endowed Chair Professor in Advanced Systems Engineering with the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Department at the University of Connecticut. He is also the Director of the Pratt & Whitney Institute for Advanced Systems Engineering at UConn. Prior to joining UConn, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and before that he received his BS and PhD in Chemical Engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece. His interdisciplinary research merges the fields of energy technology, process systems engineering and model-based systems engineering. His laboratory pursues a balanced approach to information theory for the design, optimization, control, operation, and maintenance of cyber-physical systems, with applications on energy, chemical industry, manufacturing, naval and the aerospace industry. Dr. Bollas is the recipient of the NSF CAREER and ACS PRF Doctoral New Investigator awards; the UConn Mentorship Excellence award; the UConn School of Engineering Dean’s Excellence award; AIChE Teacher of Year award; and the Chemical & Biomolecular Department Service award. He was a member of the 2016 Frontier of Engineering Education of the NAE, elected member of the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering in 2020, and selected as a Fulbright U.S. Scholar in 2024. He has partnered with over 100 industry professionals and executives in generating and managing funding for UConn that exceeds $40M leading to joint R&D, technology, patents, and professional training programs. He manages a portfolio of over $7M in research projects, while his Institute manages active research funding that totals over $50M.

Chunhui Zhao, Qiushi Distinguished Professor, Recipient of the National Outstanding Youth Fund. She received Ph.D. degree from Northeastern University, China, in 2009. From 2009 to 2012, she was a Postdoctoral Fellow with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and the University of California, Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, CA, USA. From 2012 to 2014, she was a distinguished researcher with Zhejiang University and since Dec. 2014, she has been a Professor with the College of Control Science and Engineering, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China. Her research interests include statistical machine learning and data mining for industrial application. She has authored or coauthored more than 220 papers in peer-reviewed international journals. She has published 3 monographs and one national textbook. She authorized more than 60 invention patents. She is principal investigator of a Distinguished Young Scholar Program supported by the Natural Science Foundation of China. She has hosted more than 20 scientific research projects, including the NSFC funds, National key R&D project, provincial projects and corporate cooperation projects. She has received the Ministry of Education Natural Science Award and other provincial and ministerial awards. She also received more than ten academic awards, including Chinese Young Female Scientist Award, the First Prize of Natural Science of Chinese Association of Automation, CAA Fellow and the First Young Women Scientists Award of CAA, etc. She has served AE of three International Journals, including Journal of Process Control, Control Engineering Practice and Neurocomputing, and three domestic journals, including Control and Decision, etc.

Abstract Submission

The slot for the oral presentation is 15 mins. We advise that your presentation lasts for a maximum of 12 mins, leaving at least 3 mins for the Q&A session.
Authors are encouraged to prepare a presentation in PowerPoint or similar software, to be displayed online along with the abstract. Slides, if available, will be displayed directly on the website using the proprietary slide viewer at Sciforum.net. Slides can be prepared in exactly the same way as for any traditional conference where research results are presented. Slides should be converted to PDF format prior to submission so that they can be converted for online display.
Poster Presentation
b. File format: PDF (.pdf).
c. Size in cm: 60 width x 80 height–portrait orientation.
d. Font size: ≥20.
e. Maximum size: 250 M and update the size of your PPT template into 60*80 cm.
The Poster Sessions will take place in Zoom break-out rooms. The rooms will be called after your surname. You will automatically be assigned to your break-out room, however, you will be responsible for your own room, i.e. sharing your screen by yourself, handling the comments in the chat if there are any, etc. People will then be able to visit your room and discuss your poster with you. Please make sure you have the Zoom Desktop client or mobile app, version 5.3.0 or higher.
We will reach out to you closer to the dates of the conference with more information.

Hence, by submitting an abstract to this conference, you retain the copyright to the work, but you grant MDPI the non-exclusive right to publish this abstract online on the Sciforum.net platform. This means you can easily submit your full paper (with the abstract) to any scientific journal at a later stage and transfer the copyright to its publisher if required.

Proceeding Paper Publication
You are welcome to submit a proceeding paper (4-8 pages) to the Engineering Proceedings journal (Indexed in Scopus, ISSN: 2673-4591) after the conference. Proceedings papers must be prepared in MS Word and should be converted into PDF format prior to submission. Publication of the proceedings will be free of charge.
Authors are asked to disclose that it is a proceeding paper of the ECP 2024 conference paper in their cover letter. Carefully read the rules outlined in the 'Instructions for Authors' on the journal’s website and ensure that your submission adheres to these guidelines.
